I’m a proactive person. When I moved into my house the water heater had outlived its expected life by 5 years. The plumber was surprised when I called to replace it - they’re used to people waiting for them to fail. I prefer to not wait until I have a flood in my basement. When a bat colony moved into my attic it was suggested we could ‘wait and see how it turned out’. No thank you - evict them (humanely) right now please. You get the picture. I get ahead of things. So you best believe that over the last few months as I’ve watched shakes hands at the sky whatever is happening or might happen in our economy (and by our I mean global), I’ve been thinking about what that might mean for my business - and for yours. And now that we’ve lived through whatever exactly it is we lived through this week I thought it mighty time I pass on what’s on my mind in case you’re wondering what should be on your mind. Below is exactly that, with a big caveat: I’m not including any financial advice or thoughts because I’m not a CPA or any kind of financial planner. But if business finances are on your mind, please reach out to a professional for guidance. Here’s what’s on my mind strategy-wise: ✅ Know What’s True: This may sound obvious, but one of the easiest things to lose track of when things seem uncertain is the truth. Are your clients acting differently? Is there a shift underway? It’s surprisingly hard to tell if you don’t make a concerted effort to keep track of conversations you’re having as you’re having them - the more time and space you put between conversations and conclusions, the more you may project on them. Just the other week I recorded a podcast episode with a quick and easy daily practice you can start (click here to check it out) - and if you’re feeling uncertain right now, focus your entries on what was true each day instead of what went well. You’ll quickly find patterns that you can trust. ✅ People first. Always: This won’t be a shocker coming from me, but the biggest asset you have when we have no idea what’s going on is your network. Double down on them right now, drop everything for them. And if you’ve not built a network, now’s the time to start - people are looking for connection and support from colleagues so they're open to connection. Here are a few of my favorite resources around centering your people - a podcast episode on Why Asking Matters (hint: it’s because it builds connection and relationship depth) and my free networking training in case you need a place to start - or some inspiration to kick back into practice. ✅ Building or Renovating? Know Where Your People Are At: If you’re feeling uncertain right now, it’s possible your clients are too. And when we’re feeling uncertain we act differently - specifically, we get in a renovation mindset instead of a building mindset. Check out this Sequence Over Strategy episode that I recorded just a few weeks ago to learn more about how to show up for your clients and your audiences in a way that’s aligned with their current mindset. You may notice there’s one common theme that runs through all of these strategies: relationships. That’s not because I believe deeply in relationships and so talk about relationships and relationship marketing - it’s because relationships are what matter when we feel uncertain. The anonymous ties get thrown out the window real fast and the relationships remain - so whenever you’re feeling unclear about how to respond or what to do, ask yourself what centers the relationship. You’ll probably find your north star right there. What’s on your mind right now? What feels safe, and what feels scary or unknown or overwhelming? Hit reply and let me know. If I have advice or resources to share, I will. |
I'm here helping service-based professionals (I see you creatives, service providers, agency owners...) build stable, sustainable businesses that profit in all the right ways, including energy and time. I talk a lot about sequence over strategy - that doing things in the right order is more important than nailing any particular strategy. I also talk about the difference between relationship and traffic marketing - and how to exit the relying on referral rollercoaster.
I always tell people to name the elephant in the room so I’m going to cut to the chase this week and name the elephant in the room: Over the last two months the US government has thrown the world we've known for the last several years into chaos, and the rate at which that chaos is being thrown around just keeps increasing. That’s particularly true if you’re in the United States like I am, and increasingly true if you’re anywhere in the world where US influence reaches (which is pretty much...
A few weeks ago I wrote asking you to tell me what was going on out there - I wanted to know what was working, what wasn’t, what you were celebrating and what was keeping you up at night. I wish I could say I was surprised by what I heard but I really wasn’t. Two big trends stood out: Conversion. Conversion is hard right now, especially for new leads. Previous leads and customers are continuing to show up, but it’s harder than ever to find - and close - new business. A lot of you were...
Question: Ever walked into a deli and offered the sandwich person a sandwich in exchange for the sandwich they make you? Offered to plow the driveway of the person you pay to clear yours after a blizzard? Collected some dirt from your garden to trade for new top soil at the garden center? Yea I didn’t think so. So then WHY IN THE WORLD are you constantly - and I mean constantly - telling me that you have no business and no hope to get booked to speak to your ideal clients via podcast...
